Can't open Mail 4.5 after Apple Security Update
I installed the latest Security Update 2012-004 that was released on September 19, 2012 and my Mail is no longer working. I kept getting this error message:
You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X
You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in:
/Applications/Internet Apps/Mail.app
It can't be used on this version of Mac OS X. Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications folder on your computer. For more information, click the Help button.
I must have relocated my Mail.app file years ago that the new update no longer search and update my current Mail program.
SOLUTION
1. Move the corrupted Mail.app from the Applications folder to Trash or Desktop (just in case you need it).
2. Move or copy your previous working Mail file back to the correct location, top level of the Applications folder.
3. Download and reinstall the security update file from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
Your computer will restart at the end of the install and then your Mail should launch as normal. You will also probably need to update your Mail icon from your Dock by fixing the alias link or remove and replace with a new one.
